Sin runs rampant from coast to coast. The mouth speaks its arrogances, as if there were no judgment. Of such things I think as I read the 34th chapter of Isaiah. For such crimes I mourn. Once one nation under God, we now imagine ourselves a nation over Him. We reject his laws and lie in wait for his people.
It is not enough that a nation destroys its own. We must also run across the world to destroy the lives of others. We export our sin, and approve the sin of others. And so, our sin will be upon our own heads. We have been called upon to repent. Yet we call truth the lie, and lies the truth, so our children no longer know their left hand from their right.
We delight in our carnal nature. The adulterous woman eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, “I have done nothing wrong.” (Proverbs 30:20) The abomination parades itself in the streets, and hisses at holiness. The rich man heaps up wealth for himself on the hire of the poor. (James 5:1-6) They are never satisfied. They cry, “More! More!”
Shall not the land tremble for this? (Amos 4:8)
In God’s very house the shepherd speaks a blessing on the sinner, and chastises the righteous. They fatten themselves on the poor and say, “God has blessed me!” (Ezekiel 34:2-4) They are false teachers who subvert whole houses for money.(Titus 1:10-11)
The sword of the Lord is lifted high in heaven! For the indignation of the Lord is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies. (Isaiah 34: 2, 5-6)
Repent, O sinner! Stand fast, O saint! Seek out the book of the Lord and read. (Isaiah 34:16) Trust. Obey. For God and God alone can deliver you from the wrath which is to come.
