Fortunately, there’s the Ortho-Industrial Strength Weedblaster 280Z! Guaranteed to give those pesky weeds whatfor. Just saturate them with our patented weed killing formula and watch them shrivel and die. You might take out the nutritious carrots growing nearby, but that’s a small price to pay for a weed-free garden. The rest of the vegetables will be just fine, right?
Jesus told a parable about the kingdom of heaven. He compared it to a field of wheat which a man carefully planted and tended, but in which weeds sprang up. He knew his enemy was seeking to sabotage his fields and damage his crop.
The man’s servants asked him, “Do you want us to go and gather the weeds?”
“No,” the man said. “While you get out the weeds you may inadvertently uproot some wheat along with it.”
Jesus was speaking of the church. While he planted the church with believers, Satan planted among the believers those who would sow discord, or who would openly and defiantly sin, yet still call themselves Christians. There will be weeds aplenty among the wheat. Jesus told us it would be so, and as a church we can't expect a weed-free church. But if we undertake to forcibly remove them, in fumigating the wicked we may easily damage the health and growth of that which God has planted. How sad it would be if a church fight destroyed those believers whose roots are still new and tender.
“Let the wheat and the weeds grow together till the harvest,” Jesus said. “I will separate them then, that my harvest may be safely gathered into my barn and none will be lost.”
