So when we read the Bible, we believers quickly we realize that we either have to find a way to reconcile our secular belief (theory of evolution) with our spiritual belief (God created everything just as he said in Genesis 1), or we have to choose sides.
Some of the various Christian arguments we have used in an attempt to reconcile the Genesis account with scientific “truth” include:
1 – Billions of years passed between verse 1 and verse 2. Evolution and dinosaurs happened first, then something went wrong, and God decided to create the world as it is now with human beings. That’s why we have fossils. (You’re saying God messed something up? He created a whole planet and it got out of hand on him? Our God?!!)
2 – God used evolution to create the earth and life on earth. (Evolution, random development and survival of the fittest is a terrible way to create life. Believe in evolution if you must, but please don’t blame God for it.)
3 – Since a day is as a thousand years to God, and a thousand years is as a day, it did not take six literal 24 hour days to create the world. (Aside from the fact that if you want to use this argument, you still only have six thousand years… not the billions and billions that evolution argues you need. However, the original Hebrew word here simply refers to a regular, 24-hour day such as we all know and love.)
4 – God didn’t mean for us to take the Genesis account literally. It’s symbolic. Or something…
Know that problems will always come when we try to conform the Word of God to the wisdom of the world.
